General Refund Policies
Cancellation Window: Most international transfers can be cancelled within 30 minutes of payment for a full refund, provided the money has not been picked up.
Uncollected Funds: If a cash transfer is not picked up within a certain period (e.g., 90 days for MoneyGram), it may expire, allowing for a refund of the principal amount, though some fees may apply.
Mistaken Details: If you sent money to the wrong person, it is often possible to get it back, provided the recipient has not already withdrawn it.
Fees: Generally, no fee is charged for cancellation, and both the transfer amount and fee are refunded, though some exceptions apply.
Policies by Provider
Wise (formerly TransferWise): If you cancel while the transfer is "pending," you can get a full refund. If the transfer is "complete," it cannot be cancelled. However, if the recipient's bank rejects the transfer, the money will be returned to you.
Western Union: Money orders can be refunded if they have not been cashed. A non-refundable processing fee may apply.
Ria: Refunds are issued to the original payment method if a transfer is cancelled or rejected.
PayPal: Disputes can be opened for unauthorized transactions, and funds may be returned if a claim is successful.
How to Request a Refund
Act Quickly: Contact the service provider immediately via their website or app.
Provide Information: You will need the transaction ID, receiver details, and the reason for the cancellation.
Report Scams: If you were defrauded, contact the transfer service to report the scam and potentially pause the transaction.
Wait for Processing: Refunds typically take 5–10 business days, or up to 7 working days for some services.
Exceptions and Limitations
Completed Transfers: Once money is deposited into the recipient's account, it is very difficult to reverse the transaction.
Scams: If you intentionally authorized a transfer to a scammer, getting a refund is not guaranteed, as the payment was authorized.
Incorrect Information: If you provided incorrect details, the bank may reject it, allowing for a refund, but if it went to a wrong-but-valid account, retrieval requires recipient cooperation.
New Rules (UK): As of October 7, 2024, UK banks are required to reimburse victims of "Authorized Push Payment" (APP) fraud in most cases, with refunds often processed within five working days.
